Programming a BMW Engine Computer Using ESYS Software with RLink


Use ESYS software in conjunction with RLink programming to configure the BMW engine control unit

Pre-programming preparation:

I. Preliminary Preparation Requirements

1. Prepare one computer pre-installed with OE software, ensuring it has sufficient battery power. Tip: It is recommended to keep the PC connected to a power source throughout the entire programming process to avoid any interruptions caused by power outages.

2. The computer must be connected to a wired network with a download speed of ≄5 M/s. For certain ECU configurations involving large data volumes, excessive network latency or network disruption can directly cause programming failure.

3. The vehicle must be connected to a dedicated programming voltage stabilizer, maintaining the voltage within the range of 13.2 V–14.5 V. Voltage fluctuations may cause programming failures; therefore, ensure a stable power supply.

4. Park the vehicle on a level surface to prevent the risk of the vehicle rolling away. An inclined surface may cause unexpected incidents during the programming process.


II. Pre-Programming Inspection Checklist

5. Verify that the ECU's power supply and ground connections are functioning correctly, and confirm that the ECU to be programmed matches the ECU information of the current vehicle exactly.

6. When using refurbished ECU programming, strictly adhere to the manufacturer's operating instructions. Some refurbished ECU units (e.g., those for anti-theft systems) may not pass the original OEM software validation; in such cases, the second-hand ECU may need to have its data cleared before use – otherwise, the programming process will fail.

7. It is recommended to use a brand-new ECU for programming; during programming, the device must be connected to a stable power supply.


III. Programming Process Standards

8. During programming, please carefully read the operating instructions provided in the OEM software and follow each step strictly; do not perform any operations without authorization.


IV. Programming Failure Handling Plan

9. In the event of a programming failure, first check whether the vehicle status and the diagnostic device connection are functioning correctly.

10. If the system status is normal, it is recommended to let the vehicle enter sleep mode for 30 minutes before attempting the programming again; powering off or putting the vehicle into sleep mode will clear cached erroneous data and increase the success rate of the re-attempt.

11. If the vehicle's instrument cluster fails to display information properly after programming, it is recommended to reprogram the device directly; do not disconnect the device or turn off the power supply, nor turn off the ignition switch.


Note: Whenever possible, use new ECU programming; during the programming process, be sure to connect the device to a stable power supply.



Note: Before programming the vehicle using ESYS software, it is recommended to log in to your RLink Platform account to check for any available software or firmware updates. If updates are found, please update them before proceeding with the vehicle programming.


3. Double-click to launch the ESYS software.


4. Before programming, the programming data must be configured; typically, the programming data files are stored in this folder: C:\Program Files\BNW\ISPI\TRIC\ISTA\PSdZ\data


5. Select the connection symbol; choose the corresponding vehicle based on the Vehicle Integration Level Code. Select "Connection via VIN" and then click "Connect".

Note: The IP address must be displayed in the "Connection via Vin" field before a successful connection can be established; if the IP address is not displayed, it indicates that the VCI was not properly recognized or that the ENET mode was not successfully switched. Please exit the software, re-switch the ENET mode, and verify whether the device is properly connected.


6. Select the TAL-Calculating mode to access the programming function; read and save the FA information; read and save the ECU information.

Select "Complete Flash" and click "Calculate" to compute the programming data.

Note: I-Step (Target): F020-24-03-500 – Before programming, ensure that this programming data is newer than the programming data stored in the ECU.


7. Once the programming data calculation is complete, click "TAL Calculate", then "Save" and finally "Execute" to access the Programming ECU interface.

Note: When the left ECU information panel displays in red, it indicates that this ECU can be upgraded or programmed.


8. Navigate to the Programming page; for this operation, only the DME module will be programmed. First, tap "ALL" to uncheck all ECU entries and then check only the DME entry; next, tap "Check software availability" to complete the software verification. Once the verification is successful, tap "Start" to begin the programming process.

Note: For full vehicle programming, do not flash all ECUs in a single batch; instead, program only a single module or a small group of modules at a time to reduce the probability of programming failures.

Note: After completing the programming, clean the throttle body and use ISTA-D to reset the engine calibration and clear any fault codes.
