Using RLink Device with DTS to Program the Mercedes-Benz 177 Front SAM Module

Pre-Programming Preparations:

I. Preliminary Requirements

1.Prepare a laptop pre-installed with OE software and ensure it has sufficient battery. Tip: Keep the laptop plugged into a power source throughout the programming process to prevent power loss and interruption.

2.Connect the laptop to a wired network, ensuring a download speed of at least 5 MB/s. Some ECU data files are large; high network latency or interruptions will directly cause programming failure.

3.Connect the vehicle to a dedicated voltage-stabilized power supply for programming, maintaining the voltage between 13.2V and 14.5V. Voltage fluctuations can lead to programming failure, so a stable power supply is essential.

4.Park the vehicle on a flat surface to prevent the risk of rolling. An uneven surface may cause accidents during the programming process.

II. Pre-Programming Checklist

5. Check if the ECU power and ground circuits are functioning normally. Confirm that the information of the ECU to be programmed exactly matches the current vehicle's ECU information.

6. If programming a refurbished ECU, strictly follow the manufacturer's operating guidelines. Some refurbished ECUs (e.g., anti-theft modules) cannot pass OEM software validation. Used ECUs may need to have their data wiped before use; otherwise, programming will fail.

7. It is highly recommended to use brand-new ECUs for programming, and a stabilized power supply must be connected during the process.

III. Programming Process Standards

8. During programming, carefully read the operation prompts within the OEM software and strictly follow the steps. Do not perform unauthorized operations.

IV. Troubleshooting Programming Failures

9. If programming fails, first check the vehicle's status and the connection of the diagnostic equipment.

10. If the status is normal, let the vehicle sleep for 30 minutes before retrying. Powering off or putting the vehicle to sleep can clear cached error data and improve the success rate of the retry.

11. If the instrument cluster fails to display information properly after a failed programming attempt, proceed directly with programming again. Do not disconnect the equipment or power supply, and do not turn off the ignition.

⚠️ Note: Please use brand-new ECUs whenever possible, and always connect a stabilized power supply during programming.

Programming Steps:

1.Take out the RLink device, connect it to the vehicle's OBD diagnostic port and the computer's USB port respectively, and ensure a secure connection.



2.Once the device is connected, launch the RLink Platform software. Verify the vehicle connection status through the platform's connection information, check if the drivers are downloaded, and select RLink Mode under the BENZ driver.
Note: Before using DTS software for programming, it is recommended to log in to your RLink Platform account to check for any software or firmware updates. If updates are available, please update them before proceeding with vehicle programming.



3.Double-click to open the DTS software.



4.Click on Temporary workspace.



5.Select the data storage path: benchi(C:) > ProgramData > softing > Diagnostic Tool Set > DTSProjects Daimler > BR_118_177 247 > dbr. Hold down the Ctrl key to select the BCMFA2 and EZS167 files, and click Confirm.
Note: For models manufactured after 2020, the gateway module must be unlocked before programming can proceed.



6.Select MBCar_MBVan_SMR_DiagnosticCAN_V_02_05 and click Finish to enter the programming page.



7.Click Start to identify the vehicle's ECUs and establish communication.



8.Select Diagnostic Services and double-click EZS to activate the gateway module.



9.Find and expand DiagJob. Double-click Security Access Level 1 and Security Access Level 61 to activate security access.



10.Double-click to activate the BCMFA2 module.



11.Find and expand Generic Jobs, and double-click Security Access Level 37 to activate security access.



12.Select Variant Coding, then select BCMFA2, click Connect, and click Save to back up the coding data.
Note: You must back up the coding information before programming to prevent data loss. If data is lost after programming, you can directly import the saved coding file to complete the recoding.



13.Disconnect the ECU data connection after saving the coding information.



14.Use the programming data download tool to enter the BCMFA2 software coding and download the programming data.



15.Select Flash Programming to enter programming mode. Double-click the target BCMFA2 module to activate it, click Temporarily add flash data, and import the downloaded SMR-F programming file.



16.Once the programming file is imported, check the corresponding file on the right side and click RUN to start the programming process.
Note: Ensure the dedicated programming power supply is securely connected before starting to prevent programming failure.



17.Do not perform any operations while programming is in progress.



18.Upon completion, a prompt will appear: Flash process was successful.
Note: If programming fails, please check whether security access was successfully activated and whether the downloaded data matches the vehicle.



19.After programming, go back to the Diagnostic Services interface, find and expand the Ecu Reset option under BCMFA2, and double-click Hard Reset to reset the ECU.
Note: A hardware reset is mandatory; otherwise, the ECU may not function properly.



20.Exit and reopen the DTS software, and repeat steps 3 through 8. Select Variant Coding, then select BCMFA2, click Connect, and click Load... to load the previously saved coding file. If the information matches, simply disconnect the connection, and the programming is complete.
Note: If the coding information does not match, you can click Do Coding directly to execute the coding. After coding is completed, perform a hardware reset on the BCMFA2 again. Finally, proceed to XENTRY to perform vehicle adaptation/matching.
